Hi everyone. This morning from 8:30-9:00am, I was wandering around Maplewood Park (East side of Glen Erin Dr., just North of Aquitaine Ave.). Bumped into Bob (rcflier) around 9am and we walked around until about 11am. Sighted the following:
Blue Jay x 1
Cooper's Hawk x 2 - female sitting quietly in nest then got up and appeared to be moving something (eggs?) around in the nest. Male on nearby top of lamp post eating some sort of small, brown bird - House Sparrow?
Downy Woodpecker x 1 (female)
House Sparrows - lots
Mourning Doves - a few
Northern Flickers x 2
Red-breasted Nuthatches - a few
Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers x 2
Butterflies: 120+ Red Admirals and 10+ Cabbage Whites.
Bob & I then went to Lake Wabukayne (NE corner of Glen Erin Dr./Windwood Dr., behind the condo and school) from 11:30am - 1:00pm. Sighted the following:
Brown Creeper x 1
Canada Geese x 2
Cardinals x 1 (male) - could hear a 2nd Cardinal on other side of lake replying.
Chickadees x 2 - one kept going in & out of a hole in a tree, 2nd one (larger size) sitting on nearby tree branch, watching.
Double-crested Cormorants x 2
Grackles - a few
Mallards x 8
Night Heron x 2 - perched in shrubs at NW corner of lake then they both flew towards NE end of lake.
Red-breasted Nuthatch x 1
Red-winged Blackbirds - lots of males
Robins - a few
"mystery birds" x 2 - will i.d. when Bob posts photos. Small, grey birds drive me nuts when it comes to identification! :shock:
Update: Ruby-crowned Kinglets. Thanks to BC for identification!
Butterflies: Red Admirals x 30+, Cabbage Whites 10+ and "mystery butterfly" x 1 - perhaps a Question Mark or Eastern Comma. Once again, will i.d. when Bob posts photos.
