I was there from 9:30 - 11:30.
First, no homeless people but there were signs of old camps. very unnerving to hear crunching of leaves behind you all the time (it was the sparrows).
Second, the man who owns the two large, black dogs was back. he uses the Spit as his dogs' exercise grounds. I shook my head at him and said "sir, dogs aren't allowed here." He continued to tell me that its federal land, not Tommy Thompson Park land, and he's been coming here for 30 years with his dogs. As i walked away, i said (angrily) "It sounds like you've been told this before." He said "yeah, by birders." Dude won't stop bringing his dogs there unless parks authority tells him to get lost.
So, the birds:
I expected a larger fallout post-southerly wind storm. what I saw:
Pine warbler x 3
Myrtle warblers x 6 or so
Creeper x 1
Flicker x 1
White-crowned sparrow (lots)
song sparrow
Am tree sparrow
hermit thrush
white throated sparrow (lots)
yellow bellied sapsucker 4+
juncos
golden-crowned kinglets
ruby-crowned kinglets
house wren
so its the slow beginning of warbler season but a fair amount of activity in the brush
