At first all was quiet on the bluff front. Then, at a few minutes before 8 a.m., I discovered a mixed flock of juvenile warblers and vireos just as I was existing the short wooded section adjacent to the bluff brink. The birds were feeding in an old White pine, as if there were any other kind, and also in a big sumac bush near the paved pathway. The birds were too high up for decent photos and I couldn't position myself on the sunlit side of the sumac because of the very tall weeds between the dirt trail and where the action was. All of my other hot spots in the park were quiet. I heard one catbird in a dogwood bush while making my rounds and spotted one flycatcher in an apple tree. It was so nice to see so many apples without those annoying stickers on them. I'm sure the flycatcher appreciated it too. The rest of the week promises either a north wind or a NW wind overnight so more migrants may be delivered to the park. Arriving much before 8 o'clock is now getting pointless, unlike August when all the action occurred in the preceding hour.

At least you have given it a good try!

Next week, I am off to look for Zodiacal Light. Hope the weather is good.

Holy gegensheinschau, miracle woman! I thought birds were elusive, but zodiacal light, really? While not actually gegenshein (light that shines against something from behind) your hunter's quarry is just as ethereal. I mean, is this a thing? Is there a zodiacal light hunting society? Do they have meetings? Do they have free food? Do you guys shine a bright spotlight through a dark dusty room and all say "ah". I admired your adventurous spirit before this new announcement but now I'm Justin Awe. How far north are you going to capture this elusive spirit? I thought you said that you weren't really an early riser. Doesn't this occur before sunrise? Are you filming it? This is so exciting. Someone should add another category on this forum for your exploits. Charlinoscopy. No, that's not right. Astrocharlinoscopy! That's it! I haven't been this exciting since those old adrenaline days. The stuff was expired so no one missed it. Don't forget that this dust is sacred. It gave birth to you and me. Well, maybe not me since I'm only a visitor here, but I do collect dust, including the micrometer kind. I've got some 100 micron stuff in my collection to die for. You can tell how much time I spend in the sillysphere. I can't wait until you get back and report success. And if it doesn't work out ... at least you tried.

Shortsighted, you are truly scopysighted!!  ;D

I know I have to go to a dark sky location. Not sure if the place is dark enough. Well, it doesn't hurt to try.

I used to belong to an astronomical club. This is a solo trip.

Ah well, that explains some of your esoteric pursuits. Used to belong ... not any longer then. Were the club's ambitions too nebulous for you? Do I take it then that you have a telescope? Did you take astronomy in uni? Riigghht ... none of my business. Anyway, I understand that there is a website that reveals the location of the darkest places in Ontario. I would offer you a link but I don't have one, but you might research it before you decide on a destination. Here's a thought, wouldn't the lovely geeks in the astronomy club know where the darkest sites are located. Perhaps the revelation of the next Royal Astronomical Society's deep sky event would suggest a good location, but then again, you want the eastern horizon too, not trees. Picking a good spot that satisfies both dark sky and eastern perspective to the horizon is a very challenging assignment. I need to help you with this but I'm so useless when I have a backache, or a hangnail. It just hit me! You said that you are going tout seul, far away up north, into hostile territory ... not wise. Expeditions like that need a buddy system. I used to go fishing up north but never alone. Stuff happens. We can't have the founder of Astrocharlinoscopy just vanish into the wilderness never to be seen again. The forum's ratings would plummet. Oh ya, they already have. Regardless, you need a Sherpa, an assistant, a cook, a grip, a medic, a cushion cuz the igneous rocks are hard, but please don't go alone. There are things that lurk in the night and there are legends of people going crazy after having witnessed the zodiacal light. Even if you make it back as a little crazy, we just can't have two members of this forum that are certifiably nuts.
