A number of squirrel in our backyard engage in a strange game of wrestling with sticks. They grab the stick with all four legs and roll around on the ground, often on their backs with the stick in the air. They will scrabble with their legs and sometimes leap up vertically holding the stick. They look a lot like cats playing with a toy. Anyone know what the heck is going on? The squirrels look pretty healthy otherwise.

The squirrels in our backyard do a number of other queer things. They will jump vertically up and down on certain plants until the stems/leaves are broken down to the ground. They then leave. There seems no purpose to these actions. They also hang head down off the fences stretching their bodies into the air with their backs arched. I'm guessing they're just stretching.

I suspect that the squirrels in question are young males, practicing what it is to be male.  My source.

P.S.  What's up, doc?
