Oakville warblers and LaSalle Marina - Jan 5

I went to Sedgewick Park in Oakville today and saw the Bay-Breasted Warbler, at least one Orange-crowned Warbler, 2 Yellow-rumped Warblers and 3-4 Ruby-crowned Kinglet. I missed the Nashville today, but saw it in December. Amazing with these birds in January!

At LaSalle there were lots of waterfowl, the most interesting were 20 Canvasbacks, 30 Greater Scaup, 10 Common Goldeneye, 2 Red-breasted Mergansers, 3 American Coots and the regular 100 or so Trumpeter Swans. Also 1 Great Black-backed Gull.

I have been following the story of these warblers on various forums. I haven't gone to see them yet, but hopefully I will soon. I am curious though. What are they eating? Will they survive a harsh cold snap?

They are right beside a sewage treatment facility, so I believe the warmer water there makes it possible for insects to hatch even during winter, so there would be something for warblers to eat there.

The same goes for the Barn Swallows in Burlington (that I haven't seen), they are also at a sewage treatment facility.

That sounds logical. I have seen winter insect hatches myself in winter near open water.
