I'm sorry to quibble but I don't think that a Black-backed Woodpecker would have such a pronounced white supraorbital line.

I appreciate your response and input gstuart, I am by no means an expert, I just went by what was in my bird book. The yellow on the head was what I went by. Here is another shot showing more of the yellow on the head. Please correct me if I am wrong:)

Yes, this is the same bird, the yellow isn't as evident on the first shot. I have a shot of the hairy and the black-backed about 4 feet apart looking at each other, but it isnt the greatest.

Hey Art, that bittern shot is fantastic, I've never come close to even seeing one (let alone shooting one) sitting still out in the open like that... nice work.
