I was surprised to tally up 56 species on the Spit this morning. The Wet Woods were very wet and very quiet, so most of my birds were further out. I failed to find the Forsters Tern (or any Terns at all), the Blue-winged Teal, and the Greater Yellowlegs but here's a few highlights from the day:
1 Common Loon (marina)
17 White-winged Scoter (mostly on the West side, south of marina)
21 Canvasback (triangle pond and cell 1)
2 Ring-necked Ducks (embayment D)
4 Green-winged Teal (embayment D)
2 Northern Shoveler (embayment D)
6 Am. Wigeon
2 Hooded Merganser
2 Horned Grebe
22 Black-crowned Night-Heron (trees at tip of Cormorant colony)
3 Killdeer
1 Belted Kingfisher
2 Flickers
7 Eastern Phoebe
1 Northern Shrike (eastern shore)
1 Winter Wren
2 Barn Swallow
2 Savannah Sparrow
Special thanks to the birders and photographers I met along the way!
