Sadly on Wednesday our good friend BIGFRANK passed away.

Frank was an avid birder and loved nature in general.  After two life-changing trips to South Africa in the early 2000s, Frank began visiting his local park, Rosetta McClain Gardens, to see what he could find there.  What he found was that the park was on a major migratory route both in the spring and in the fall - he found paradise only steps from home!  Frank learned to identify each colourful little spring bird very quickly.  He then patiently pointed out and taught others about what he was seeing and how to identify them.  With Frank it was always most important to tell others to just enjoy and appreciate anything they saw or heard.  Over the years he and all those he had taught have compiled an impressive list of nearly 200 birds identified, including a number of rare species, in and around his little park.  He wasn't long in to birding before he, with the help of his good friend Colin, realized that the fall was going to become more spectacular then the spring for bird observation.  Each fall hawks in great numbers would soar over Rosetta and along the Scarborough Bluffs heading to their southern destinations.  After a couple of seasons of 'hawk-watching' at High Park and a few trips to Hawk Cliff in Port Stanley, Frank set up his own Hawk Watch at Rosetta.  He was really only interested in one thing - to make others aware and to enjoy - the numbers weren't as important.  That was Frank!  With a love for the big birds, Frank became a volunteer at the Canadian Peregrine Foundation, a cause he always spoke so passionately about.

A bench will be dedicated at Rosetta McClain Gardens in honor of BIGFRANK.  Anyone wishing to donate money can PM me privately.

Oh Walter I am so sorry to hear this news!  I only had the pleasure of meeting Frank a few brief times on the Raptor Watch - but what a sweet man!  And much too young!  I'm sure this is a terrible loss for you and so many others.

My thoughts are with you.

Very let down to hear about Bigfrank's passing. I had the pleasure of birding with Frank a number of times, he had one heck of a keen eye for ID'ing birds and helped me find many interesting species that were a thrill for me.

Frank helped me many many times over the years with IDs, but also with monitoring a Peregrine nest, which many know was like Frank's second family, the Peregrines that is. He worked hard for the Peregrines and also his watch at Rosetta.

He'll be missed. Hopefully he's already flying with the birds he loved so much.

Sorry to hear about BIGFRANK's passing.  In my little time on this board he has always seemed to be very helpful, even pointing me in the right direction for LaSalle Marina in Burlington.  I am sure he will be missed. R.I.P.

Very sad news for our birding world, although I wasn't fortune enough to meet him, I enjoyed his posts and comments. His vast knowledge and wisdom will be greatly missed. I think the bench would be an excellent idea as anyone who knew him,  knows he was the bird king of Rosetta gardens

Very shocked and sad to hear this news :(
We Never met but he seemed  genuinely interested in helping others.
My last Contact with "BIGFRANK" was in Feb 2013 regarding the Id or the name
of a banded Peregrine.

I'd like to express my sympathy to all family and friends.

I'm sorry to hear about the passing of BIGFRANK. We've met frank over the years at the Toronto sportsman shows and learned quite a bit from him. You could hear the passion in his voice when he talked about birding. We just learned about the raptor watching at Rosetta and were going to come down  and join in the fun. Would of loved for frank to be there as well. R.I.P. BIGFRANK you will be missed but not forgotten.

Days later I am still shocked and saddened.

I had spoke with Frank mere hours before his passing.  We had a nice conversation over the phone and some chuckles at silly guy stuff.  I try to find some comfort in this, not knowing how he was feeling physically but do know he smiled and laughed so close to his death.  Now I cannot keep a promise I made to him though, which sucks; but will in some other way.

I only knew Frank for about 3 years.  He introduced me to a lot of great east end people (and taught me a thing or two bird related).  I didn't see him as much as I would have liked due to work schedules and travel distances.  But we kept in touch fairly regularly and come Falcon fledge watches, we caught up with many hours spent together at the Islington and Bloor nest site not just talking about birds but everything else be it women woes, old drinking stories from our younger days, etc.  Anyone who has spent time at a fledge watch knows it can be like watching paint dry the first number of days.  I was happy to spend it with such a great individual that in due time I could call my friend.

It sucks!  I, like so many, lost a friend that day.  And a few Peregrine Falcons lost the guardian of their children each year.  Nature lost a nut (nature nut...  Haha).

I will probably blog about Frank this week.

A birth certificate shows we were born.  A death certificate shows we died.  Pictures show we live.

I just heard about this today via ONTBIRDS. I too was very sorry to hear about Frank's passing. I don't have anything to add to everyone's fond memories...you've all captured him well.

He'll be missed.

I have only ever stopped at Rosetta once. It was a chilly late winter morning. There was only one other person there. It was Frank. I had never met him before and had never heard of him. What should have been a 10 minute visit turned into a few hours talking with Frank. Sometimes, out of the blue, you meet the most warm and fascinating people.

He was such a nice man. Sorry to see him passing so early.

I was at Rosetta yesterday and was hoping to see him there. Instead there was a memorial and I wondered if someone had taken a leap off the cliff. Only on getting closer did I realise that it was for the big guy.

RIP Frank.
