Bobolinks

Grass Lake near Cambridge has several Bobolinks, as well as many Savannah Sparrows and a few Eastern Meadowlarks. No sign of the Sandhills and I think the Ospreys have given up after the storm, a few weeks ago, blew down their nest

I know the Cambridge area pretty well but dont know where Grass lake is.  Can you give me some directions?

Hi Bill & Jaye ... the coordinates are 43.290233,-80.349476. This being 1000-1050 Shouldice Side Rd, Cambridge, ON N1R 5S5. General direction is from Cambridge to Paris, take (St Andrews St) /Regional Rd 75 and Continue to follow Regional Rd 75, for about 5.2 km. Turn left onto Shouldice Side Rd for about 1.4km. Crossover Beke Rd (staying on Shouldice Rd). Follow the road for another 1km and look for the Bobolinks along the side of the road (on the same side as the Towers) just past the lake on the left. Hopefully they haven't started to cut the grass in the field. Last year about this time the Bobolinks pretty much disappeared as soon as they harvested the grass.

Thanks so much.  I will try to check it out Tomorrow.  But if they are in a hay field, good chance the nest will come down with the hay.  Unless by a slim chance the farmer knows about the serious situation for the bobolinks in Canada in the last many years.  Here is hoping!

The birds are nesting in the radio/tv tower field not in the neighboring farmer's fields ( I am sure some are). FYI- there is not one pair but many, hard to count but estimated 12-20 pairs throughout area, with only males being seen now as females are on the nests

I went and saw the Bobolinks.  But was also pleasently surprised to see a lone Sandhill Crane having lunch out in a nearby corn filed.  Thats a first for me..the crane.
