Tufted Duck?

Hi everyone, I'm new to Toronto and to this forum but have been birding for quite awhile elsewhere.

I was wondering if anyone knew a good (and relatively safe) place to do some night-time birding in the Toronto area, preferably somewhere within biking distance of the subway line. I am particularly interested in finding some owls...
If anyone is interested in coming along I am planning to go out next week and would be happy to meet some other birders!

Proximity to subway? You might try High Park though night time may not be necessary. From time to time Gr.Horned, E.Screech are seen. Best though would be Leslie St.Spit (Tommy Thompson Pk) at the foot of Leslie. 20 - 30 min. by bike from nearest subway, either Union Sta. Bloor/Danforth line; Broadview or Pape. Definitely by day is good. Many of our Owls regularily spotted; L & Sh. Eared, Gr.Horned, Snowy, + others. A bike is handy at the Spit to get around. See other postings on this site for OPEN times, usually weekends. There are also organized 'walks' regularily through the TOC, TFN, OFO and others. Good Luck.

If you are indeed searching for a Tufted Duck in your nocturnal quest, I would greatly appreciate detailed ongoing reports. Should you locate one (or more), this could be the story of the year.

Keep us posted, so to speak. And good luck with the owls.

No sorry, I am just looking for owls, nothing that ambitious. It wrote the wrong subject line by accident... I had planned to ask about a tufted duck but changed my mind and forgot to change it. Sorry,

Hey, don't apologize ... just kidding about the quacker. Besides, for my money, watching owls easily trumps standing on shore, freezing various body part off, scoping huge rafts of scaups (been there, done that) for one with a 50's haircut ... do they still make Brylcreem?

If anyone sugessts using tape-playback to find screechers, please ignore them. These little rodent-biters have enough to deal with, what with staying warm, finding food, and not becoming same for larger owls to be wasting energy responding to fake calls.

Again, best of luck. This is the place to get the information you need.
