Monarchs and Meadowhawk

I was a bit surprised yesterday to see a trickle of migrating Monarchs at Sam Smith Park.  Most where up near the treetops.  I focused my bins on a couple of black specks that I expected to be hawks, but turned out to be butterflies.

Also found a male White-faced Meadowhawk, which seemed kind of late.

Until yesterday's rain, we've been averaging 2-3 monarchs (simultaneously) on our backyard butterfly bush just west of Toronto. It's been a big relief to see them after having none till August.

I didn't see any Monarch butterflies this year in Meadowvale or at YYZ airport perimeter.   :shock:

My mom saw lots in her neighbourhood and back yard (Mavis/Rathburn - Mississauga).
