I was birding the hydro cut this morning that runs east of the parking lot at the bottom of Haldon Ave., when a small bird flew across the trail and began foraging in a stand of dead goldenrod. Since it was so small and hyperactive, I assumed it must be a kinglet, but once it was in the glasses, I was surprised to find an Orange-crowned Warbler. This was between the second and third hydro pylons.
Not much else around. Small flocks of Northern Cardinals; a single flock of Dark-eyed Juncos were the only sparrows I saw. One robin. A pair of Red-tailed Hawks flying west above the hydro cut, one noticeably larger than the other. The first bird of the day was a Pileated Woodpecker flying east along the ridge towards Dawes Road. I thought it lit in an oak grove but was unable to find it again.
