Seen November 9, 2013 at Colonel Samuel Smith Park on the rocks at Whimbrel Point on the eastern rocks.

Not anymore! I got stellar views of the Purple Sandpiper at Sam Smith today thanks to a nice lady who pointed it out to me. It was on the rocks at the east-facing side of Whimbrel Point at around 12.20 pm today.
