I had a couple of first of season birds for me today at Riverwood, Yellow-bellied Sapsucker and Brown Creeper.

That's interesting.  I have been seeing Creepers all winter long in and around my area (parks near Eglinton & DVP) and usually with mixed flocks lead by a number of Chickadees and also accompanied by a couple Nuthatches of one kind or another and the odd Downy or even Hairy woodpecker.  Is it normal for Creepers to overwinter, or is it just a local effect in these parts?

Brown Creepers are regular winter birds, but in fairly low numbers. Much larger numbers are passing through during migration, mainly in April and October.

See this graph from e-Bird.
