Had a decent outing today at the Charles Suriol Conservation area. I started around 10:30 am and immediately noticed the Song Sparrows singing. Lots of Robins, Chickadees and a couple of Cardinals. Then I heard a Brown Creeper and saw him shortly after. While looking for a skulking bird on the forest floor that ended up getting away (probably a Robin), I heard the unmistakable call of a Northern Flicker. Got closer and indeed I saw 2 of them.
Further yet, by the pond, I saw that the Tree Swallows are back and were checking out the nest box close to shore. Went by the woods near the historic house (near Lawrence) and finally saw some Golden Crowned Kinglets. On the way back I saw 4 Blue Jays romp on through the park. Then I noticed a raptor flying over the highway which ended up being a Cooper's Hawk. Remembering that Red Tails typically circle over the DVP, I looked for them and while doing so a RTH flew into the line of sight of my binoculars lol.
Then I went back and checked out the woods across the 2nd set of traintracks closer to Eglinton. That's when I noticed more and more GC Kinglets. It was as if they were just arriving. At the end of the day I lost track...they were everywhere. Interestingly I also saw a couple of Juncos (a male and a female) on the forest floor. I didn't think too many were left. As I looked up towards the buildings across the Don River, I noticed a couple of circling birds of prey which ended up being Turkey Vultures.
