A golden-crowned kinglet visited the yard today, and obligingly demonstrated some call notes.
Mostly the news is "still."  The juncos are still here, and the male hawk is still here (I haven't seen the female but I haven't been birding much this week).  The robins and cardinals are still singing.
Last Sunday the news is "just."  I just saw a bird with a warm brown back before it ducked under the fence.  My husband just saw a sparrow with a white head stripe.  Then the hawk came & the cardinal who had been singing out of sight switched to alarm calls instead.  The juncos who had been foraging took shelter in the brush pile.  There was no mad dash for cover, just a phase change.  One instant a few were foraging, the next three could be seen motionless among the branches of the brush pile.  Later we saw a brown creeper.
