I currently use the older version of this lense with decent results on a D50 body. Anyone on the forum shooting with the updated version, how its going for you with image quality etc.

I don't use the new version of the 80-400, but I used to own the original. As soon as I started doing serious bird photography three years ago, I got rid of it. I currently use the 300mm f4 with a TC14EII for the equivalent of a 420mm fixed lens.

I bought the new Nikon 80-400mm towards the end of last year just before my trip to Las Vegas and Aruba. It's a great lens for traveling and also on situations when you have to walk a lot (e.g. Leslie Spit). Here are two Flickr links with the photos taken with this lens. You be the judge.

By the way I forgot to mention that I also used 300mmf4+1.4Tx. I found that with new AF-S 80-400mm VR I got a lot more keepers than the prime and converter combination. This is particularly true when the condition is less than optimal e.g. cloudy day. I tried the new 80-400 with a 1.4Tx and the result was unsatisfactory for me; I never used that combination again. Hope all this helps.
