Great Blue Heron

I hope that I'm mistaken but I'm pretty sure that I saw a Great Blue Heron flying north over the 401 near Westney Rd. in Pickering . Has anyone seen a Heron like bird at Lynde Shores or near by . Somehow I think it would be a tough go for the Heron at this time of year .

Not down there, but I had a GBH fly over my workplace over by the Buttonville Airport area this week.

They can be quite hardy. There's usually a few over-wintering where the water stays open. Near powerplants (such as the Pickering one), there's often open water.

About 2 weeks ago at Halls Road we saw a great blue heron go by - there was 3 of us.  One of the fellows got a photo of it.  We were all quite surprised.  This is in Whitby.  Ann

I spotted a GBH in a stream in German Mills Park yesterday; couldn't get very close but got a few shots in rather poor light. He took off and landed downstream where I got a few more long distance shots. If the conditions are ok I will try again tomorrow (Monday) morning.

My son and I went back to German Mills Park last Sunday (Feb 3) and the heron was sitting at the top of a tree above where he hangs out in the stream. We got a few shots before he took off but like the last time, the light was bad (heavy overcast) so nothing worth posting. Yesterday I was in Earl Bales Park and a dog walker asked me if I'd seen the "big grey bird with the long beak" on the golf course. I never got that far but I assume it was also a GBH so there are definitely a few still around for the winter.
