On October 22, 2014 at around 9pm a Barred Owl was found unconscious on the ground by one of my friends who works security at the Rogers Campus at Bloor and Mt. Pleasant.  Presumably it had hit the building or suffered some sort of other injury.  It eventually regained consciousness and the owl was apparently (hopefully) taken to the Toronto Wildlife Centre.  I have called the TWC and left a message inquiring about this owl but I have not yet heard back from them.  The reason I'm posting this report is because it's a fairly uncommon owl (ebird classified it as "rare") so I thought it was note-worthy.

Today my friend was able to confirm that the people who took the owl away (he's not sure which agency) did in fact drop it off at the Toronto Wildlife Centre.  I will post more updates as I get them.

Here's a picture my friend took with his cellphone.  He put a cigarette package beside it for size comparison.

And here's the ebird report I submitted: http://ebird.org/ebird/view/checklist?subID=S20351765

All's well that ends well. I'll be waiting for more updates on the owl.
This reminds me of an incident from past summer.  On a Sunday morning in September when I arrived at a pond looking for bird activities around the pond, I saw a gentleman named Dan from humane Society busy rescuing a Mallard with broken wing. It was reported that morning and the society immediately dispatched Dan to rescue the bird. The best part was when one of the pond visitors, moved by his selfless action, wanted to give Dan $100 and he politely refused saying that it was his job. These humane society guys do a great job.

I have good news to report.  The TWC just called me and told me that they do indeed have the owl and that it is expected to make a full recovery.  Apparently it suffered a fractured bill from the impact.  But otherwise in ok shape.

This is great news...really glad it will be ok.  :)

I wonder where they'll release it.
