Barn Swallows East Point Bird Sanctuary

A trip to East Point on Monday proved successful, the midges were out in full force as were the Barn Swallows flying about in the hundreds in a feeding frenzy. Tired of all the flying they would occasionally rest in groups while equal amounts of birds remained in the skies above.

Interesting to see the variation in the amount of rust colour underneath. Could the lighter coloured ones be younger birds, as juveniles are white underneath?

I think in general the females are lighter underneath but there's a lot of variation.

these are fantastic pics........when i was there on tuesday, all we saw were red-winged blackbirds....

maybe it was the millions of midges that were out that day
