Snowy Skirmish
on:
March 08, 2016, 09:21:06 AM
This year we had no luck finding any Snowy in Downsview Park. So, on past Sunday a friend of mine and I drove to Minesing Wetland Conservation area to take a last look at the Snowy Owls before they departed for their northern habitat or before all the snow in the fields melted away in this warmer weather. We weren't disappointed - found altogether a set of 8 owls, three of them adult males. Towards the end we were lucky to witness a skirmish between a male and a female. The female was sitting far out in a farmer's field when the male appeared from behind. The male departed quickly after the short skirmish. Not sure if it was to do with territorial fight or simply the reproductive urge that brought the male closer to this female. No matter what, it was a sight to behold.

Wanchan - I find these kind of actions shots most often result from dumb luck, lot of patience, fair bit of anticipation, reasonably good reflex and above all spending a lot of time out in the field. Being in the right place at the right time is what matters the most.

Great pictures Dinu! At least your drive wasn't too long to see these beauties. Hopefully we'll get 'em back at DV next winter.
