Yes folks, it's that time again. Time for the raptors to start heading south once again. I do realise that it's still quite early for full-blown fall migration but over the past few days we've seen a few 'non-local' and a few 'local' birds pass over our hawk watch site at Rosetta McClain Gardens in Scarborough.
August 6thNorthern Harrier - 1
Broad-winged Hawk - 1
American Kestrel - 1
August 13thAmerican Kestrel - 1
Merlin - 1
August 17thOsprey - 1
Bald Eagle - 1
Cooper's Hawk - 1
LocalsTurkey Vulture - 8
Sharp-shinned Hawk - 1
Red-tailed Hawk - 2
As I mentioned above it is early yet and we're still learning which birds are 'resident' along the bluffs and which birds are moving south. Just thought I'd get the word out.
Also of note - Monarch butterfly migration through RMG appears to have started early this year.
August 15th - 11 Monarch counted
August 17th - 25 Monarch counted
Happy birding and butterflying!

Is backyard birding our new normal?
