Red-necked Grebes - late hatch?

I was at Colonel Sam's late last week and came across a family of Red-necked Grebes. Seems like a late start for a family. There were two little ones and two or three eggs still on the nest when I checked this week.

I'm not sure how late they breed on the prairies, but I've seen newborns at Sam Smith in mid September. Some pairs seem to keep trying all season if they have nest failures.
