I am travelling to Iceland in August next year for about a week.  I am going with friends, we are doing a farm stay for 4 days, then 3 nites in Reykavik.   This is not a birding trip per say, but one birds whenever and wherever!!!!!!!  This will probably be my only time to ever travel there.    Also, far as I know the other people are not birders, like birds but.....!!!!!!!
For those who have travelled and birded there, what books did you use, purchased them where etc.?  I don't what to spend a hugh amount of money on a book that will get slightly used.  I do have the Princeton Field guide, Birds of Europe and wonder is I can get by with it.  It is by Lars Svensson.  Might also check out Open Air Books to see what they have.

Thank you in advance for any info, advise.

Good birding.

Hi Cabs.. I haven't birded Iceland, but I usually check out the website 10000birds.com. They have an article from 2013 that may be of interest..   http://www.10000birds.com/birding-icela ... he-fly.htm

I haven't been to Iceland, but "Birds of Europe" should be fine. They have an interesting mix of waterbirds, but very few passerines.

Have a nice trip!

Sorry to be delayed in replying, but Winz and Thouc, thank you for your replies.  I will check out the website.

FYI - just found out that Open Air Books closed last year, that is a shame, as it was our go to place for maps (before Maps.me!!!), bird guides etc when we were planning a trip.

I will try and report back after the trip.

Thanks again.

Good birding!!!

Has anyone been to Iceland and done a day birding trip around Reykjavík?

There are short ones that go out to see Puffins and whales but they all stop by mid August or I have just not found the right one.  These ones are 2-3 hours long.    Guess nesting season is over.  I am there at the end of August.

Thanks for info and advise.

Headed down east for six weeks, so should see some good sea birds.

I had a great trip to Iceland and had pretty good weather.  We were on a farm stay near Blondous for 4 days and rode Icelandic Horses.  This was not strictly a birding trip, but I did get lifers;  Whooper Swan, Redwing (much like our Robin) and Northern Fulmar.   Went out on a whale watching trip from Reykavik, but did not see any.
