Unwanted Guest, part 3, Catch and Release

We left the trap in attic for the last few months & everything was quiet.

Last night while I was at work the Familia noticed sounds coming from the attic hatch area.

So just now, up in the attic I go.. What? Here we have a Red Squirrel in the live trap.

I look around and the bathroom vent line is lying on the insulation, so I guess while the fan was running this guy got thru the roof vent and knocked down the flex vent. Another job I am not looking forward to fixing.

We released "Little Red" at a park on the other side of the creek.. "He'll be Back".

I give him a week...weird though....I never get them in the house or being destructive...well they do chew the wire mesh on my suet feeders and I think they chew nest box entrances unless that's mice....I've found mouse nesting material in the boxes and I've never seen a red squirrel in the boxes....I have always found them to be  nothing but delightful guests at my feeders.

Axeman! We moved "little Red"  5 minutes away by car.

I was really surprised to find this guy in my attic trap. I expect him to return Shortly.

I guess we will have to really upgrade the entry  security stuf. There is some serious prevention stuff that will prevent wildlife from entering said locations using

A few years back I had a chipmunk that used to climb up instead my rain gutter and store seeds up along the edge of it back in one corner that remainded mostly dry evern if it rained. Smart little fella. It den was under my back outdoor cement patio so that was just fine.

I had a nuisance chipmunk a few years back...it all started with me lamenting that our chipmunks weren't the friendly kind...you know like in Algonquin...gradually I coaxed this particular chipmunk to take food from my hand...and then any time I walked out onto the deck she was there...she'd climb up my pant leg even if I was wearing shorts (OUCH!)....if I sat at the deck table she'd climb up and pee or...poop while sitting on me....then one day I had walked out and was enjoying the birds at the feeders when I felt a sharp stabbing pain in my right big toe...she was chewing on my toe! We had just finished a large jar of cashews so I brought out the empty jar and set it in front of her...I could see her fighting the urge but it was no use...against her better judgment she stole inside the jar and before she could exit I screwed the lid on...I drove her over to my neighbour...the shortest straight line distance between us is over a half km....and a good chunk of that would be over open short grass...I was pretty confident that she was my neighbour's problem now....well it took a couple of months but she made it back...but she never trusted me again so either way, I solved my chipmunk nuisance.

I would trade anything with having a chipmunk coming to play with me, you know, minus the pee, the poo and the toebiting

That's what I said....and then she pee'd and poo'd repeatedly....the toe was the last straw....that hurt lol...my wife was born in India and came to Canada as a pre-teen and then spent her high school years in the Himalayas (at a high school)...returning to Canada for university....when we met, she had NEVER seen a moose so early on in our courtship I took her to Algonquin...we hiked the mizzy lake trail -- I've always had great luck seeing moose on that hike -- it had been a long day and nothing to show for it....we rounded a corner on the trail and came upon a large pond and there he was....a bull moose in all his glory feeding in the centre of the pond...excitedly I pointed him out and set our packs down so we could spend some time watching him....after a little while I realized that my wife (g/f at time) was not with me...I looked around and found her feeding pringles to a chipmunk...I shook my head and asked "what are you doing -- the moose is over there....we can feed chipmunks any time"....she said, "He looks just like what you see on TV....I've never seen one of these before...what is it?" lol

What a lovely story, and today is May 20, 520 the number in Chinese sounded like I LOVE YOU. So maybe a good time as any to pass it to the mrs.  :lol:

Wonderful story indeed. I have a few well-wishers in the form of red, gray and black squirrels at the backyard and they regularly come to knock (literally) at my patio door to check on me during this Covid-19 lockdown period
