Saga of Eddie

In case you haven't heard, an escaped male Mandarin Duck, named Eddie, took up residence in Fairy Lake in Newmarket in the early part of January and promptly became a star attraction until it was captured on Jan 13 and was returned to the owner to be united with his girlfriend Wilma. In between, a female Mandarin Duck showed up in the Fairy Lake for few days and the two were celebrated as a romantic pair (I hope Wilma doesn't know Eddie's new love interest). I wished Shortsighted saw the pair and heard their stories, he could've written a really interesting piece on them to the delight of all the members of this forum. Anyway, after missing out on a Mandarin duck a few years back in Lynde Shore in Whitby, this time I showed up at the location on Jan 9 and took some photos of Eddie. Here are some photos of the handsome duck and to provide a contrast I posted a photo of a Muscovy Duck.

I have a feeling another exotic bird farm has placed the female there in hopes of keeping Eddie at the location or as part of their own breeding program. I recently read that each Mandarin duck could sell for $300. Anyway, here's some more info on Eddie.

Wow this I hadn't heard about this one....I heard about the one in NY's Central Park in late 2020...although that one seems to have simply disappeared and there was no determination of where it came from.


I'm working on spotting my first male wood duck in plumage....sigh....here's to spring 2022.

Why sigh.......fall is the best time to see them and in full plumage....a number of good parks in GTA with them including High Park


The mandriln is a very common game farm bird and lots of peolpe keep them for private ponds
