It's nice that I can still go out for a walk in my neighbourhood and get my exercise. There are things to see which make this lock-down stuff  a bit easier like this long-staying Wood Duck this morning at Norton Place Park in Brampton. Sorry I have to use a link but I don't subscribe to any photo hosting sites.

You are indeed fortunate to find something somewhat exotic to see while taking a walk. I only see discarded garbage in the woodlot that shadows the street. I'm half way to your luck in that you see a Wood duck and I see ... wood.
I'm wondering whether that Wood duck actually knows that he is a Wood duck and is perhaps following the shared behaviour of the crowd and identifies as a common Mallard.

Thanks for throwing some fresh paint on our dreary pandemic canvas.

Thanks Shortsighted. My Wood Duck appears to have taken on a girlfriend. She's a Mallard. I am guessing her parents approve. We'll see how long that lasts. I went for a walk again today before sunset and wouldn't you know it he was in a position where I could have gotten a photo of him away from the Mallard mob. Didn't take my camera though. D'oh!

It sounds like you have discovered a very tame Wood duck. Perhaps emboldened by the Mallard mob that so easily accepts human surveillance. The ones that I sometimes encounter in the Rouge are very skittish and will relocate at the slightest intrusion. The only occasions I was ever able to get reasonable close was by covering myself in a camo drape and remaining motionless. Even then, the ducks suspected something was amiss, although their reaction to my presence was more a matter of curiosity than consternation. They would come close enough to appraise my obscure form, often passing back and forth searching for recognition and the meaning of those noisy clicks.

Nice find and photo.

You can embed e-Bird photos here. Open the image in the checklist in a new tab, copy the link (the 480 can be removed for larger size) and put in the link in the box that opens up when you insert an image on this site.

Thanks Thomas. I thought I tried that before. I will try again next time I post a picture.
Yes Shortsighted, he is the tamest Wood Duck I have ever come across. Lucky for me he's just a few minutes walk away. There were a few Wood Ducks in this park before the lake froze over. He's the only one that stayed and moved into the creek which affords very close views for people and open water for him. There are more ducks joining the mob every day so who knows what I might find. Yesterday I noticed a few more Black Ducks and a couple more hybrids.
