A juvenile of this species has been around in Cell 1 in Tommy Thompson Park since Sunday. When I first heard of it I ignored it thinking that I've already seen one in India and didn't like to drive along congested DVP to see one again. Then I did a bit of research and realized that what I saw in India is the old world version of it and considered a different species, Purple Swamphen vs. Purple Gallinule. So, On Tuesday afternoon I packed my folding bike in the trunk and headed out - luckily DVP was relatively empty and the demolition of the Gardiner Expressway at the ramp to Lakeshore was complete. After biking to the location I immediately found it walking on lily pads or sitting on rock sunbathing. Here are some photos of it and also posted a photo of an adult Purple Swamphen from India. Note the color difference of the legs (Yellow vs Red) of these two species. Being a juvenile. the Purple Gallinule hasn't developed its striking plumage yet.
