Lincoln's sparrow

If this is a Lincoln's Sparrow, then it is a lifer. I just want to be sure.

I believe that it is a song sparrow. The light-coloured lore is more Song than Lincoln. The parts of the bird that serve as salient features are not that visible on this shot. Isn't it always the case?

I guess it was too good to be true--there were a slew of Song Sparrows that day. This one did look different, but then they do have a lot of variation. Was it the streaking on the breast that I should have looked for as the definitive feature?

I'm not sure of specific definitive features of either sparrow. To be definitive one would really, seriously need to know what they are talking about and that condition is so not me. To be more general, the Song sparrow has coarser features vis-a-vis streaks of dark against light. The markings are bolder, broader and the overall contrast so created is greater than what is seen on a Lincoln sparrow. The Lincoln is more somber-looking when viewed up close, ie: less contrast between light and dark. The Lincoln has finer, more delicate streaking that appear "crisp" when viewed from a distance. There is also considerable buff tones in the Lincoln that is lacking in the Song sparrow. Where the Song sparrow has creamy light areas the Lincoln has neutral gray areas. Once you have seen a Lincoln in the field you will likely be able to ID another easily when encountered again. The same goes with photography. Once you have successfully photographed a Lincoln you will more effortlessly ID one at some later date.

Thanks for the photos and the description. What to look for is clearer in my mind. As you suggest, once I see one, the differences will will be resurrect.

A Lincoln's Sparrow will give you the impression that it's a finely dressed and sophisticated version of a Song Sparrow.  Its patterns are finer, more intricate, more symmetrical and consistent.  A Song Sparrow's will often look rougher, bigger, and uncouth lol.
