Anyone in Port Perry? (favor to look for Osprey)

Hello all!

For the last 3 years there have been Ospreys in Port Perry that I visit. they've nested at a baseball diamond at the back of a school. I was wondering if anyone is in the neighborhood to take a quick look to see if there are any Osprey there this year. I went there early May and the nest looked desolate, or perhaps I came too early. I'd like to go and visit them since I'm off for a week but with the price of gas these days I don't want to come out empty handed.

So I would really appreciate it if anyone is in the vicinity and don't mind to check.

I forget what the school is called but it's the only one there, located between Hwy12 and Old Simcoe st on the north side of Reach Street. There is a small skateboard park on the right side of the school and if you follow the dirt road too the back is where the baseball field is. You will see the nest on one of the lamp posts.

My son and I birded Wylie Rd. by bike and then went for a swim in I think it's Canal L. on Centennial Pk. (Co.Rd.33) running N. from 48 W. of Rd.47. Theres a boat launch where we took a quick dip to cool off while watching not 1 but 2 Osprey nests with adults flying and hunting.  Full value for my gas; birds, bike ride, interesting botany on Carden and a swim with Osprey's close by.

The nest south of the Nonquon Lagoons has 2 young along with 2 adults.

Based on Tyger's cue and directions from Ray, I went there yesterday and find the nest right on top of the lamp post at the back of the arena and beside the dirt road. And while I was doing my field work there a local gentleman came up and told me about another nest just outside the golf club he plays at. The name of the club is King's Bay Golf and Country Club. To get there, follow Simcoe St. from Port Perry toward North for about 10km and turn right when you see the sign near Seagrave. After a few turns here and there according to more signs, you will get to the entrance of the club and the nest is on top of a platform on a post just at the other side of the road opposit the club. I think there are five Ospreys in it now. On the other hand, all the gates to Nonquon Lagoons were locked and I couldn't find the Durham Region Transfer Station. I saw a few black terns flying back and forth. Anyone have up-to-date information about the lagoons?

So are you saying the opreys are behind the school in the baseball field?

Yes, the lamp post is just south of the lagoon fence. The softball diamond is on the north side of Reach Street to the west of Simcoe street.

Yeah I know where it is, I've visited for the last 2 years...just wanted to make sure they were there this year. I went to look for them early april and it looked desolate, guess I came too early

Thanks so much for the heads up on the Osprey. I was at the baseball field last Sunday. Two Osprey were there. I got a chance to try my new 400 mm f5.6 lens. It was cloudy but nonetheless it was worth it to drive there.

I was up there today and saw the female and one juvenille.  It was well worth the trip to the baseball diamond.  When I first arrived the juv was just sitting on the nest.  Then I saw the female arrive with a  fish.  Amazing.  No sign of the second juv or the male.

I went to both nests this morning.  At the one by the golf course there was a female and 2 juvenilles, and a few times all three of them took off from the nest and would circle around the area.  At the Baseball diamond there was a female and a juvenille.  The female left at one point and returned with a fish.  The ospreys are beautiful birds and it was well worth the trip!

I agree Mark.  Went to both locations myself today.  The juv at the baseball diamond is also flying now.  Mom was very agressive watching the young fly.  Beautiful to watch.  The second location at the golf club one juv were soaring in the field the other not quite as confident but flying short distances.  

What a sight to see.

Glad to hear everyone is enjoying them......I'm still hoping to see them soon, but it's nice to know they are back!
