While still waiting for a Tiger Swallowtail I noticed an Aphrodite Fritillery on my Echinicea today. I couldn't get a shot of it with wings open, only with the wings folded up, which was disappointing. At the same time a Monarch showed up but preferred to settle on the Buddleia. Most shots were taken with the 300mm + 1.4x TC attached.

Great light and shadows!
Did they help by turning their best side into the sun for you?

I could approach the Fritillery from one of two directions, into the sun or with the sun behind me, so I tired both. Often a butterfly will pivot around as it feeds and I only have to await the moment it presents broadside. I showed my butterfly hand to Mary and she misled me by saying that she hardly gets any variety of butterfly up Peterborough way and then showed me her hand, one photo of a Great Spangled Fritillery and won the pot. Never play poker with Mary. She pretended that she didn't know what it was. I suggested to her that her turtle rescue and relocation activities would make a good Tv series: Turtle Rescue, or Wetland Petrol, or Turtle Taxi but we couldn't decide whom to get as co-star. No one wants second billing to a turtle. Do you think that Mary should wear a cape?

How nice! I was in a nursery today saw lots of butterflies, one red admiral was lighter than others, thought it was interesting.
