RFI: Red-Breasted Merganser - Female vs Immature?

Hi everyone

I first just wanted to say hello, as I'm not only new to the board but also new to birding (and still trying to get a handle on photography, as well!).

I was out in Sam Smith Park on Sunday and along with seeing a Black Crowned Night Heron and a Belted Kingfisher (:)), I saw this bird hanging out with some ducks:

My best guess is either a female or immature Red-Breasted Merganser(?) but my book gives no information on how to distinguish between the two, only saying they resemble each other.  Since this isn't a great photo I'm not really expecting anyone to be able to tell me which one this is, but I'd love to know how to distinguish between the two for future reference.

And of course, I'd love to know if I'm way off-base thinking this bird is a Red-Breasted Merganser to begin with.

Thanks!

Thanks Soaring Hawk!

I'm hoping this kind of thing (female vs immature) just becomes easier the more birds you see.
