The great total solar eclipse is only a month away.

I just put together some clips and images which I made today and share the short clip (only 2 minutes) on my YouTube Channel. It shows my trip to the Great Smoky Mountains to watch the total solar eclipse in 2017. The real time lapse clip shows how the sky was darkened as the eclipse was in progress, and the coronal plumes around the sun when it reached totality.

Hope to see the Total Eclipse again in April. What's your plan?

Cool video.

We have taken the day off work and plan to find ourselves somewhere in the Niagara wine region.  Many wineries are offering viewing glasses.  Might be nice to have lunch, taste some wines, and then view the eclipse.

Thanks, Dr. John. It will be nice to enjoy the eclipse and winery at the same time!

I will likely go to the Niagara Region as well. Not sure where I would go yet. I will visit the region a couple of weeks before the eclipse to figure out.

I'm glad to see the prevailing optimism regarding this upcoming eclipse. Will any birds still be wearing their eclipse plumage for the occasion? I plan to watch the clouds roll in and envelop everything in a canopy of overcast, but that shouldn't effect the Niagara bench wines, except that the Riesling will appear a little less brilliant. Would there perhaps be comfortable viewing benches installed at  some Niagara bench wineries? Vino del Sol anyone? I used to have a 'sun filter' back when the sun spots hadn't landed on my skin. That filter screwed onto a telescope's ocular (eyepiece) and served to block enough radiation, including UV, to make viewing the sun relatively safe. I have no idea whatever happened to that filter. Alternatively, I could mount a telephoto lens onto a tripod without a camera attached and project the eclipse onto a white surface secured to a second tripod but that sounds like trouble, in some form. I hope the event turns out favourably for everyone concerned. I may or may not see anything when the time comes, even if I actually manage to remember the date and time of the event, but I'm way past something as elaborate as 'making plans' that will ultimately be confounded by circumstance. With Charline's experience at capturing this sort of event I'm sure it will appear on the forum in due course, even if she has to rent a jet to fly above the cloud cover ... for Charline is a force to be reckoned with.

That's exactly how I'm feeling and what I've been thinking as well.

Would love to see it but Mother Nature is so changeable and unpredictable!  ???

I hope so too!   :D

Charline and Dr. John ... Niagara sounds wonderful!  Hopefully will see photos here on the forum, The Weather Network, YouTube, etc.

Tell me about the unpredictable weather.

When the annular eclipse happened during the pandemic, I traveled to Nipigon. But it rained on my eclipse parade.  :(

I am sorry to hear that SS, your interest in astronomy, has become a thing of the past.

I just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Jo-Anne, if I go, I may not even have the strength to carry a bottle of water on top of the cameras and tripods.

Wine tasting has got to be at the bottom of my list. I wish Dr John will toast for all of us.  ;D

Let's face it, eclipse-woman-of-the-far-north-that-bringeth-forth-rain, my interest in things astronomical remains extant but I've been there and tried that; so yes, at my age most everything is in the past, except the impediments that stand in the way, such as the continuing lack of financial fuel and the anchour of responsibilities that collaborate to remain steadfastly at their post. I'm hoping that you make it to your ecliptic station despite the burden of cameras ( I still remember those twin camera days but with the added burden of film [inside joke]) and that inclemency stays elsewhere while you record the event. Try doing a rain dance ... backwards. Then again, it never worked for me, but I can't dance worth pissy weather.

Can you watch the partial eclipse from your home, no??  :o

If you need a pair of solar glasses, most astronomy clubs are distributing them for free.  8)

If not, there are often group buys of the solar film. I made my own solar filter after buying a small sheet from a former club member.

Many clubs would allow a free meeting or two for casual visitors. The Durham Region Astronomical Association should not be too far from you. But I am not sure if it has a meeting next Wednesday or it was held last week.

The meeting info: Meetings are held from 7:00 PM to 9:00 PM on the second Wednesday of the month, from September through June
Whitby Library
Meeting Room 1 A/B
405 Dundas Street West
Whitby, Ontario

I don't have a lot of fuels either. My age is such that there are not a lot of solar eclipses ahead either. But at least I look forward to a tomorrow.  ;D

My husband bought solar glasses from a place in Georgetown. Planned to go down around Niagara for the day, hotel rooms are very expensive, so ended up booking a campsite at Rondeau for 3 nites!!!!  Same site we are on at the end of April for almost 3 weeks.   Hope the weather cooperates!!!!!

A camp site is a great place! Yes, hotels in the Niagara Falls Region are very expensive. I booked a motel in Burlington, where I stayed before and know the location well. I can cancel before April 6, if the weather is not good.

Free solar glasses are often distributed if you find a site which is sponsored by an astronomical or educational organization. They are not expensive if you don't want to take a chance.
