I made this short video to feature some amethyst specimens from Thunder Bay. The smaller ones were collected by me during my two trips to the mine. The last specimen was purchased from the gift shop in Ontario Legislative Building, which sells the amethyst rocks because it is the official mineral of the province.

On Sunday, I will visit another mine in St. Catherine's, with my club. I am not an avid collector. Just hope to get some interesting photos and videos.

Cool idea, basing a short video on a mineral sample as topic. I wouldn't worry about the Auralite moniker because it just underscores the abundant minerals also present in the sample thereby designating it as something slightly removed from Amethyst. As you said, Amethyst is just Quartz with impurities, such as iron to give it a purple colour. Iron oxides come in different states of oxidation and a rare version of iron-contaminated quartz is a dark amber colour and it is called Citrine. Heating amethyst in a lab can change the oxidation state of the iron impurity and turn Amethyst into a light yellow colour, a sort of man-made Citrine. If even more iron is present within the quartz it becomes Smokey quartz. When quartz is weathered and broken down and suspended in solution it can percolate into a substrate to form chalcedony, such as agate. Very dark reddish-brown forms of it is called carnelian. Quartz crystals that have grown the regular way and that are rich in titanium, instead of iron, becomes Rose quartz.

Chalcedony ... a version called Prase

I think the rock which I bought from the Queen's Park store, is neat.

I have visited the amethyst mine twice in the last two decades. My understanding is that the dark purple and red colors are indications of high quality amethyst. However, I love the color change from white, to grey, dark purple and lavender with clear Chevron bandings.

SS, are you a geologist or astronomer??

In fact, I'm retired and therefore useless ... a strain on the system. Do I care? Not particularly. I used to treat persons with a certain type of pathology that they resented having in the first place, couldn't or wouldn't pay me to treat because they felt that the system should pay for it, whether it was the government or the insurance plan, which means I never made a meaningful income despite my education.

I got interested in astronomy when I was a teenager but at that time the telescope hadn't yet been invented, at least that's what my parent told me when I asked for one. I took a course in Astronomy and Astrophysics at university because I figured that I could squeeze them in with all the biology courses. I soon realized that Astrophysics was all math. The final exam was oral, in a seminar room with the proff and a blackboard. I immediately recognized the advantage of that because I had a minor in BS. A concomitant interest in geology (heaven and earth as it were) also dates back to the Carboniferous Period when leaving a gynormous carbon footprint to do whatever you felt like doing was par for the course. I've had lots of interests and hobbies over the millennium but walked away from all of them due to lack of a sufficient income to pursue them further. Yes, I realize that gynormous is not a real word. That's one of the perks of being retired, I can finally use stupid words and not give a rat's ass about always acting like a professional. That, my dear lady, is why you wonderful people have to put up with me. Forgive my long-winded reply. Let's face it, I'm liable to do it again ... cuz I'm retired, without benefits.

SS, thanks for sharing your story.

You are retired, but we can see clearly that your mind isn't. It all depends on how you wish to live your life. Don't the majority of us all try to prioritize our limit money?

Yesterday's trip was great, the weather was not. We were roaming among the rocks in rain and showers.

My rock collection got so heavy that that I had to throw away some. Will make another video to show off.

This is a short video of stromatolite - a fossil rock from a period when the life started to emerge on the earth.

Have you visited any caves, or caverns? That would be an awesome subject. I've only been to two, one in Germany and one in West Virginia. I probably took photos but who knows whatever happened to those. A DSLR would have been incredible but they didn't yet exist. With all the caves and caverns to be seen during an Appalachian spring you could collect every colour of calcite imaginable: Green, red, orange, blue, white, pink, dogtooth. The colours are the result of impurities. I know just the title ... Allegheny Rainbow. Just a thought. I do have them from time-to-time. It's just that I don't explode with them like you do. At my age it's more of a fizzle.

Yes, I have visited some, in Asia, USA and Bermuda. Some of my Bermuda photos and videos have been published through the agencies.

I purchased a stalagmite once and later gave it to my friend who was a professor of geology. Sadly she passed away a few years ago.

My club organizes tours to many locations. I am not particularly into caves. But when the opportunity arises, sure I'd go. I sometimes carpool with my club friends.

On Sunday I collected many different minerals. Yesterday my old computer crashed twice when I was editing my videos. It cannot handle the longer videos anymore. I am actually leaving to shop a new laptop. I have no choice, it's my tool.
