Now's the time to whet their little appetites and get the kids (and yourself) a field guide. There are many excellent bird books available at all book stores ranging from beginner to advanced. And there's a myriad of parks and parkettes throughout the city and area chock full of many bird species for you and your family to identify. Outfitting the gang with binoculars is highly recommended and does not have to be a great expense.

Agreed.  As a birdwatching dad (my son is 7), I can't tell you how rewarding it's been.   Off to Florida tomorrow.

That's a really nice photo of the nest, by the way.  :)

Becareful  of the advice, my son asked me what thet bird was (it was a starling) and I had no idea. Off to buy a guide and 25 years later, I have many books, binoculars, scopes, friends, experiences, memories all because of "What bird is that dad?" Go for it, and get a good guide, I like National Geographic or Roger Tory Peterson's books.
