While not exactly my backyard, the woodlot is across the street from my front yard and that's where I spotted my FOY Northern flicker. I was backing my car into the driveway when I saw it. I stopped immediately. With my car still across the sidewalk I grabbed my camera from the car seat, opened the door, but just then it flew away beyond my range. I then parked as per usual and waited a spell. The flicker didn't return.
