Warden woods & snakes

Went for a stroll in Warden woods yesterday evening, saw quite a number of what I think are Garter snakes, they were almost every where along the path. We probably saw atleast a dozen of these little fellows and sadly a few dead ones as well.

Does any one here know why they were out in such big numbers; could they be a newly born litter? All of them seem to be juvenile.

the snakes in your pictures were brown snakes but im sure you also saw garter snakes as now is the time that they are all very active in finding a safe harm place to hibernate over the winter.

Those look like adult common brown snakes!

Yes these are Northern Brown snake also called Dekay's snake.  Those ones look like adults, they are a small species.  They like to basking on pavement in the evenings because it gets so nice and warm in the sun.  Unfortunately this makes them easy targets for predators, cars, and being intentionally killed by people .
