Alistair McGiven and myself went out to the spit last night in search of the woodcock and were well rewarded. At around 7:00 pm we found a snipe on the edge of the permanent pond near the road to the marina and between 7:30-8:15 found two woodcock in the baselands halfway between the marina and the parking lot (within the trees mostly). The woodcock were very vocal during this period and we heard atleast 4 individuals calling, possibly as many as 6. By moving very quietly we were able to get close enough to an individual to observe it feeding.
Thanks very much to Vivian Bessel and her OntBirds post which steered us in the right direction.
