We have a number of blue jays at our shelled peanut feeder but one in particular is most entertaining. We call this one "Fussy". Fussy comes to the peanuts, picks up several (usually 5 or more), shakes them before deciding which one to take. On a number of occasions, Fussy will take one & fly to a tree about a block away only to return a short time later to drop the shell back in the feeder! Sometimes one nut has been removed; sometimes all that is returned is the empty shell! Fussy has been one of the highlights of our backyard!
