Funny! I had the same behaviour from a pair of tree swallows yesterday,
 Cripes, really?!
I've never had any problems with tree swallows before but have had 2 separate male Red-winged Blackbirds peck the back of my head during surprise attacks. These males at Lake Aquitaine are completely nuts!
I think I was too close to their nest box - then they landed side by side and let me take their picture :-)
The only nest I've seen so far out here at the lake is a Robin's nest. I'm keeping my eyes open for babies.
Too funny re: picture. At least you got a good souvenir out of the experience!
...you didn't say who won - did you turn around or get past him?
I went left, he went left ... I went right, he went right .... Arrgh! Finally, he flew onto a low branch of a small bare tree just to my right side and was giving me the total evil eye! I then continued to walk along the main trail but kept looking back constantly, not trusting him at all - was expecting a peck to the back of the head!
