Three weeks ago while setting out on a canoe trip in Killarney Provincial Park, we found freshly hatched Snapping Turtles.  They were quite a distance from the water and seemed to be having trouble getting there, so we helped as many as we could find.  I lost track, but it was at least 15.
Here's a handful getting a lift:

and one making its own way:

They were emerging from this well concealed hole, about the size of a Chipmunk hole:

The end of September seemed extremely late for these turtles to be hatching.  I would have thought early September at the very latest.

The late date and the somewhat uncharacteristic nest site (grass & gravel) made me wonder if the nest was buried deeper by some parking, lot maintenance after the eggs were laid.

There are a few more photos here.

Awesome photos.  I especially love the first picture!  :D

It's nice to read about people that are kind and helpful to animals, helping the turtles on their journey.

Great story. That's probably about the only time you'd dare put a snapping turtle on your hand :)

Fabulous shots. Nice to know some of the snappers will make it to the water.
Great scenery as well, some of the shots are breathtaking from the top of the hills. Looks like you guys had a great time.

.

We've had snapping turtle hatchlings on Thanksgiving weekend (several years).......Port Severn area.

Though a little further south than Killarney......your encounter still doesn't seem too late.

Neat little critters are perfect copies of the big boys.......shells are only 3/4 inch across.

They crawl very slowly on frosty mornings

Great pics.

That's surprising to me since the adult turtles are rarely seen that late in the year.   Certainly makes you wonder how the little ones will survive. :?

Thanks Irene, the scenery up there really is amazing.  The hike to Silver Peak is long, but worth it!
