New Forum Member....Hello.

I was passed along a link to this forum from a fellow member that was out here in the Vancouver area visiting family and getting some birding in. I'm originally from Ontario (Oshawa) and moved out to Vancouver 10 years ago. I'm an avid birder, certified bird bander and work in the orinthology field. I get back to Ontario a few times a year and look forward to tracking the progress and rare visitors to the Ontario region.

I just wanted to say hello and introduce myself. Congratulations on the Phainopepla out in Brampton. Great bird for that area.

Hi Les, welcome aboard. My name is Paul O'Toole and am retired from the Canadian Army. I have been birding since I was a boy and have recently ( 2 years or so) have taken up photography of birds. Live in Kingston Ont and was originally born in ST. John's NFLD.

Welcome. You said you were originally from Oshawa BUT I'm wondering with a moniker like "ambleside birder" if you actually started out in England in a place called Ambleside in the Lake District?
Margaret, the birder from Brampton, ON, but originally from Bradford, Yorkshire and plenty time spent walking up the fells around Grasmere and Derwentwater etc.  (I'm proud to say I've even been up Striding Edge on Helvellyn.)

Hi Margaret,

Ambleside is actually the name of the area that I live in here in West Vancouver. My birding addiction started in Oshawa, where I was born and grew up. The reason for "amblesidebirder" is I survey this area pretty much everyday. We have a few hotspots here on the North Shore and they have become my second home. I haven't had an opportunity to bird the UK, but it is certainly on my list of places to visit.

I'm curious to know what "Mr. P" (Phainopepla) is going to think about the snowstorm that has hit here this morning.     Sitting here typing this posting and listening to a snowplow out back of building.  (sigh) ... and so it begins.

Welcome to the forum, we're out in Orono just east of Oshawa (the old forest station if you know the place).  I've only been birding for about a year now but my 5-year-old and I have lots of fun tracking down our avian friends.

My two sisters live not far from Cockermouth so I know the area well;  Bassenthwaite lake and Derwent Water.  Too bad Cockermouth was under 3' of water....

Tom, thanks for the welcome. I know the Orono area very well and the old forest station. Years ago when I was going to high school I grew up in Courtice (was pretty much the sticks back then). I had friends in Orono, Bowmanville, Port Perry all over the place. Welcome to the wonderful world of birding. It's awesome to hear that your 5 year old has taken up the hobby with you.

Craig, Colony Farms is one of the great places to bird out here. We have a banding station set up there. The next time you come out this way get in touch with me. I'd be happy to give you a tour. Great way to see Western birds up close.
