Nice pic! Are you sure it is a coyote? It looks like it could be a red fox in one of those different colour phases. The head profile looks more like a fox. I can't really tell though without the tail.

It could very well be, it was a long ways off so it may be a fox.

I am heavily leaning toward it being a red fox. but with out a tail shot I would not say 100%

1)It's shade of red is the red you see in foxes not coyotes
2) the jaw and ear structures are much more similiar to a fox
3) the fur looks longer like a fox and not like a coyote.

well, my 2 cents.
i,m kinda leaning towards a fox myself.having lived in northern ontario(timmins),for years,i got a chance to see 3 different colorations,of fox.the regular red,a cross fox(dark back,extending down the sides),hence the "cross fox" name,and the not very common silver fox,the rarest,and most beautiful version with a black back,and silvery sides. to me,this one looks like the more common,cross fox.

Definitely a red fox - the white patch on the lower jaw which looks like it extends down into the torso are helpful identifiers.  This animal has more red to it as well, not so much the tan colour associated with a yote.

Common guys that is not a fox.  Look at the snout, every red fox has some amount of black fur in the whiskers area this animal does not.  Red foxes have black fur on the edges of their ears but definitely have it on the top half of the back of the ears.  This animal doesn't have any black markings in that area.  Coyotes on the other hand have no black fur at the whiskers area, its just a straight white line of fur running above the mouth, just like this one.  But the main indicator that its not a fox is that theres no black fur on the back of the ears.  Every red fox has black fur on the back of the ears.  Its just to big to be a fox as well.

This is a 100% Northeastern Coyote.  This canine is bigger and way more muscular to be a Red Fox.  Northeastern Coyotes and Red Foxes both have white on their throats, but Northeastern Coyotes have dull red and brown on the forelegs, sides of the head, and muzzle with brown to a dark brown back which this canine has.  Northeastern Coyotes can also have a fair amount of light yellow on them but this Northeastern Coyote does not appear to have any yellow from what I see.  The pelt on Northeastern Coyotes can vary though.  Northeastern Coyotes have only small scattered areas of black and white.  Red Foxes have way more red and way more darker red too.  Red Foxes also have more white and black than Northeastern Coyotes too.  Some Red Foxes can be almost pure black and can be silver too.  Red Foxes also have black legs which this canine does not have.  The Coyotes that have spread to Eastern Canada are descendants from the Coyotes from the Prairies.  In Eastern Canada they are called Northeastern Coyotes.
