This is my first effort at posting a pic. so hoping it will work.
I assumed that this was a Chipping Sparrow but the area around the eye was definitely brown not black thus it is probably an American Tree Sparrow.
What does the team think ?
                      Thanks
                           Robin (my real name!)

PS...............I recently read a thread on this site that explained how to post a picture directly onto the post but I seem unable to find it now............again any help appreciated.

Yes, it's an American Tree Sparrow. In the picture you can see a hint of the distinctive dark sport on the chest.
American Tree Sparrow is the much more common of the two during winter.

Yep.....American Tree Sparrow.....along with the faint central spot on
it's chest.....it has the rusty eye stripe (Chipping Sparrow has a black stripe)

P.S.  -  You simply can post the IMG Code instead.....then your picture will show in your post.

Thanks for the ID.
I want to test the "Img" facility on this page.................some forums have a test site but I'll try it here.
http://s964.photobucket.com/albums/ae12 ... g&newest=1

However i can't get it to work.

1.......I posted the picture to Photobucket (chosen at random; any other site more appropriate for birds ?)

2..........Copied and pasted the URL here

3......Hit alt+p

4.......the hyperlink appreared not the picture.

  :?:

I know these things a straightforward when you know how to do them and I have unsuccessfully checked the site for information, to no avail.

    Any help much appreciated
                Thanks again..........................Robin

.

From the "Share this Image" box on you Photobucket page, you need to copy the IMG code and paste it in your post here.....it'll look like this:

There needs to be a at the end (both of yours appear at the end)

Also, make sure that the BBCode is enabled when you post (Options at the bottom of the page)

Hi Robin, beautiful bird feeder! Just joined forum today and this is my first post.  I think one of the easiest way to ID the American Tree Sparrow is by the bi-coloured beak as its the only sparrow to have one.
