Hi,
We went up to Wasaga this past weekend and I was pleasantly surprised to see a rather rare sighting.
There was a nesting piping plover and the only reason we saw it was because of the volunteers on duty with a scope focussed on it
and the snow fence around a large area to protect it. Even then it was quite hard to actually see (as you may notice in the pics below),
but they are promoting the awareness of these birds and making sure to protect them as best as they can. I think there are volunteers there from morning till evening. Other areas of the beach were also closed off for protection of the piping plovers.
The volunteers are quite willing to talk and provide info. Apparently there used to be another nest along the beach, but they think one of the pair were attacked by predators. Both the male and the female take turns sitting on the nest. Hoping this nest stays safe.
Can you see the piping plover? This is using a 200mm lens.
This is cropped from the first picture.
Thought I'd share, enjoy!
