RFI: Butterfly IDs

I found a nice variety of butterflies in the Torrance Barren last week, but I'm struggling to identify many of them.

This first group of images are at least two different individuals of at least four that were nectaring on the same clump of shrubs.  I think they were Atlantis Fritillaries, but I'd welcome other opinions:




I puzzled a lot over this next one, but I think it's a Coral Hairstreak:

Here's a less sharp, but unobstructed view:

I think this one's an Eyed Brown, but again, I'm not sure:

The toughest one is this skipper.  I'm guessing it's a Northern Broken-dash:

Hi Brian,

Some really nice photos there Brian.  I'm no expert but my best guesses would be that you are correct on the first 3 butterflies and the fourth one I would say is a female Crossline Skipper.

I think on this board at least, you are the expert!

With so few field marks, I really wasn't sure if it was possible to ID the skipper.

Photos Needed for "Butterflies of Ontario"

The Royal Ontario Museum is preparing a field guide to the Butterflies of Ontario. It is seeking images of adult butterflies, chrysalyses and caterpillars for each species recorded from Ontario (see list). Images of specimens in their natural habitat are preferred.

You must have copyright of any images that you submit and photographers will be credited appropriately if an image is used in this field guide. Submission of images does not guarantee that they will be used. Please indicate if remuneration for use of your image(s) is required.

I'm glad some knowledgeable folks have weighed in to support your i.d.'s.  I just wanted to say congrats on the variety and pics.  I don't seem to see too much beyond the routine ones (which are still beautiful).

Fantastic to see these Butterflies .. as I have taken several pics in my back yard of various visitors.  Recently just happened to get shots of one thats' the same as the first one of Brian's .. saves me some time trying to ID it.    This site / people -- just  super!!
