This clever little Heron (Green?) is using bread, thrown by people to other birds, to bait fish.
Who says birds are dumb?

I'll tell you one thing - that bird is a lot smarter than most of the people who commented on the video!:)

That was pretty incredible...now I wonder if it will spread...if it hasn't already...I liked the caption though -- who you calling birdbrain...

You're a victim of circumstance!
nyuk! nyuk! nyuk!

Funny video! I like how the heron tries a new spot when he has no luck at the first.

Very interesting to watch. There was a National Geographic article back in the 70s showing very similar behaviour. I can't remember what type of heron it was (though it looked like a green heron from memory) but it was using fish pellets to attract fish.

From the BBC Series by David Attenborough " The Life of Birds" There is  clip of a similar type with a small Heron using cognitive thought to 'steal' feed from farm ducks and 'bait' for fish to catch. Aren't we supposed to be opposed to 'baiting' of birds??

apparently there was a related phenomen amongst crows in the UK -- learning how to take the cap off milk bottles...and it spread.

I thought it was blue tits that drank the cream from the top of milk bottles.

It was the blue.
And now that you mention it, I never heard that pun all the time I was in England, the land where "Page 3" and "PHWOAR!!!" comprise half the national vocabulary...
