i bought one 2 years ago and it works well , I do not know how energy wise it is
but the MODOs love it

For years we used a heated dog water dish, worked well but you have to provide a branch or something for the birds to perch on. It finally stopped working this year and we've just replaced it with

Much shallower but birds still love it. It empties fast though (evaporation). and we are topping it up every couple days or so. The whole neighbourhood comes here to drink even the squirrels. The one and only time we've ever had blue birds they came for the water and stuck around nestled near the bird bath for a morning before moving on
