I live along the Upper Niagara and right now there are a ton of birds in the water but my wife and I were shocked to see a Bald Eagle along the Parkway near Fort Erie yesterday morning. This is the first time we've ever seen one along the river. The cormorants have stripped a couple of trees bare and the Eagle was calmly perched on one of the branches. I looked for it again today but no luck, probably turned traitor and went across the river to the American side.

 8) My first up close adult Bald Eagle sighting was in that location about 10 years ago.  He/she was perched on a tree branch, not far from road.

Of course neither one of us grabbed the camera before we left the house. Driving the Parkway as often as we do it is almost imperative to bring the camera. Huge rafts of birds in the water the other day. However the ice is forming at the riverbank pushing the birds farther out from shore.

A year ago my wife and I were in Victoria BC and went on a whale watching trip. Never saw a whale but they took us to this island called Race Rocks which the guide described as a haven for juvenile Bald Eagles and we observed plenty of them that day.

Amazing how one day there are no birds there and the next day there are thousands all along the river.  Quite a sight to see!  Used to travel the scenic route from Niagara Falls to Fort Erie for lunch at China Buffet and shopping at Dollarama.  One time during a huge snowstorm, the driver took a wrong turn and we ended up on the bridge to the U.S.  It was a bizarre experience having to explain first to U.S. customs then Canadian customs officer what had just happened!

This morning we noticed quite a few Common Mergansers and like you said the variety of birds changes daily . They weren't there the other day. The eagle has gone for good it appears, never saw it again.

*just a note: China Buffet closed its doors a couple years ago

I live in Niagara-on-the-Lake and have seen the bald eagle perched on a tree near the mouth of the river near Fort George.  I saw it sitting on the same tree two weekends in a row.   I got a shot of him before hie took off for the US side.   I was talking to some fisherman who were in a boat and they say they have seen 3 Bald Eagles in the lower river

I was at LaSalle Park today and there was a junvenile Bald Eagle perched in a tree at the marina.  He was in the tree for about 1 hour before he flew off

Last Monday I was near the power plant in the Selkirk area and saw 4 Bald Eagles. One juvenile was perched in a tree then it flew away to soar with 2 other juveniles and an adult.

I was at the Nature Centre at Royal Botanical Gardens in Hamilton on Friday and a mature Bald Eagle flew low over the main road in front of the building. It really caught me off guard. It was a nice surprise.

Happy Birding.

My wife and I took a run down there along the Parkway today in the faint hope of seeing the eagle(s) and getting a picture. No luck, however we did see a red headed woodpecker just outside NOTL and earlier saw a single solitary cormorant along the Upper Niagara near where we live. Spring can't be too far away.

Back again or never left. Saw the eagle just a few minutes ago along the Upper Niagara near Service Rd. 12 & the Niagara Parkway. I wonder if it's going to become a permanent resident?
