Maplewood Park - Friday, March 18th

[Bird Brain]

Hi everyone.  I was walking around Maplewood Park this morning between 9:30-11am.  At 10am, I was taking a good look at last year's nest and all of a sudden, a male Cooper's Hawk flew right past the front of my face, "cacking" loudly, landed on nearby branch and was giving me the evil eye!  I was out of there.   :shock:  I haven't noticed any repair to last year's nest and no activity in it either.  Have been looking for another nest but not seeing any.  

Other birds sighted:

Blue Jays - a few
Cardinals - lots, both males and females - males are singing up a storm!  
Chickadees - lots
Crows - lots
House Sparrows - lots
Juncos - a few
Mourning Doves - a few
Red-winged Blackbirds (males) - a few
Robins - a few
White-breasted Nuthatches x 3

  Bird Brain,  what you can do,  if you can bring yourself to get up early enough,  is go to the park very early in the morning (about 30 min before sunup).  Nesting Coopers will vocalize for a short period before first light,  and you should be able to find where the current nest is being setup - this is a effective method for locating Coopers nests.  It sounds like they are probably in the park somewhere - and right now is the window in which this technique will tend to work (the beginning of the breeding period when they're setting up the nest).
